Understanding Education Administration Tables

Overview

Education administration tables store data used to manage students, programs, courses, enrollment, attendance, and academic performance. Each table represents a different part of the education system, and together they show how students move through programs and courses.

A table is like a spreadsheet where each row is a record and each column is a field. For example, the students table stores student information, the programs table stores academic programs, and the courses table stores course details.

Other tables such as sections, enrollments, and terms capture how courses are offered, how students register, and when academic activities take place. These tables are connected using keys like student_id, program_id, course_id, and section_id.

To analyze education data, we use basic SQL commands:

  • SELECT β€” Retrieve data
  • WHERE β€” Filter data
  • COUNT() β€” Count records
  • GROUP BY β€” Summarize data

These help answer questions such as:
β€’ How many students are enrolled?
β€’ How many programs are offered?
β€’ How many courses are available?

The Basic Pattern

SELECT column_name, COUNT(*) AS total
FROM table_name
GROUP BY column_name;

Examples

Example 1 β€” Total Number of Students

Example 2 β€” List Unique Program Types

Example 3 β€” Count Courses by Department

Practice Tasks (Your Turn!)
