SQL aliases temporarily rename columns or tables inside query results. The underlying database is completely unchanged β aliases exist only for the duration of a single query. They are one of the most practical formatting tools an analyst has for making raw database output readable by business stakeholders.
In industry, analysts use aliases to improve readability, create business-friendly report headers, simplify technical column names, prepare dashboard outputs, and make SQL results immediately understandable without post-processing.
The Basic Structure
AS goes between the original column name and the alias you want. Single-word aliases need no quotes. Multi-word aliases must be wrapped in backticks in MySQL β for example, AS `First Name` not AS First Name.
Basic Alias Syntax
SELECT column_name AS alias_name
FROM table_name;
Without aliases, query output shows raw database column names β first_name, transaction_id, unit_price. These names are designed for the database, not for business reports. Aliases let analysts replace them with human-readable labels that require no explanation.
Aliases Only Rename the Output
The column in the database is still called first_name. Aliases create a display label for the result of this query only. The next query against the same table will still use the original column name.
Rename first_name to customer_name
SELECT
first_name AS customer_name
FROM users;
When an alias contains spaces β like Transaction Amount or First Name β it must be wrapped in backticks in MySQL. Without backticks, MySQL reads the space as a syntax error because it expects a single token after AS.
Backtick Rule for MySQL
In MySQL, use backticks for any alias that contains a space or a reserved word. Single-word aliases like Amount or Status do not need backticks, but Transaction Amount and Product Category do.
Multi-Word Aliases
SELECT
transaction_id AS `Transaction ID`,
amount AS `Transaction Amount`
FROM transactions;
Aliases become even more valuable when combined with functions like ROUND(). Instead of seeing a column labelled ROUND(amount, 2) in the output, the analyst provides a clean label like Amount. Aliases on calculated columns are not optional in professional work β they are expected.
Standard Report Pattern
SELECT product_name AS Product, ROUND(unit_price, 2) AS Price FROM products β this is the standard pattern for a product pricing report. The alias makes the output immediately shareable without any cleanup.
Business-Friendly Product Report
SELECT
product_name AS `Product Name`,
unit_price AS `Price`
FROM products;
Order Status Report with Aliases
SELECT
order_id AS `Order ID`,
order_status AS `Status`
FROM orders;

AI Prompt
Write a MySQL query to show first_name as First Name and country as Country Name from the users table.
SQL Answer
SELECT
first_name AS `First Name`,
country AS `Country Name`
FROM users;
Practice 2Rename transaction_id as Transaction ID and amount as Amount rounded to 2 decimal places
AI Prompt

FROM sessions;
Knowledge Check
Five questions β select the best answer for each.
1. What does AS do in a SQL query?
AIt filters rows based on a condition
BIt permanently renames a column in the database
CIt creates a temporary display label for a column in the query output
DIt joins two tables together
Correct. AS creates an alias β a temporary label visible only in the query result. The underlying column name in the database is unchanged.
Not quite. AS creates a temporary alias for the query output only. The database column keeps its original name.
2. In MySQL, when must backticks be used around an alias?
AAlways β every alias requires backticks
BWhen the alias contains a space or reserved word
COnly when the alias is longer than 10 characters
DOnly when used with ROUND() or other functions
Correct. Backticks are required in MySQL when an alias contains a space (like `First Name`) or uses a reserved SQL keyword. Single-word aliases do not need them.
Not quite. Backticks are required when the alias contains a space or a reserved SQL word β e.g. `First Name` needs backticks, but Name does not.
3. Which query correctly renames amount to Transaction Amount in MySQL?
ASELECT amount AS Transaction Amount FROM transactions;
BSELECT amount AS `Transaction Amount` FROM transactions;
CSELECT amount = ‘Transaction Amount’ FROM transactions;
DSELECT amount RENAME `Transaction Amount` FROM transactions;
Correct. Multi-word aliases in MySQL require backticks. Option A would fail because MySQL reads the space as a syntax break.
Not quite. The correct syntax for a multi-word alias in MySQL is AS `Transaction Amount` β backticks around the alias.
4. Does using AS to alias a column change the column name in the database?
AYes β the column is renamed permanently
BYes β but only until the session ends
CNo β the alias only affects the output of that single query
DNo β but it creates a new column in the table
Correct. Aliases are output-only labels. The database table is completely unchanged. The original column name is still used in every other query.
Not quite. AS only renames the column in the output of that query β the database table and its column names are unchanged.
5. Why do analysts use aliases when combining ROUND() with a column?
AROUND() requires an alias to function correctly
BTo give the calculated output a readable label instead of showing ROUND(amount, 2) as the column header
CTo permanently store the rounded value in the database
DTo prevent rounding errors in the result
Correct. Without an alias, the column header displays the raw function syntax like ROUND(amount, 2). An alias like Amount or `Transaction Amount` makes the output immediately readable.
Not quite. Aliases on calculated columns replace the function syntax in the output header with a clean, readable label.
Part 1 Summary
The key ideas from this lecture β keep these in mind as you move forward.
SQL aliases improve readability by creating cleaner, more professional, and business-friendly query outputs. Use AS after any column name. Wrap multi-word aliases in backticks in MySQL. Aliases are output-only β they never change the database.
